One of the many small and hidden liberations of staying at home most of the time is that there has been no need to lug a heavy handbag around anymore.
When I’m out for a walk, I have no need to carry anything (except maybe a football). And on my forays to the shops, I’ll be holding a clutch of bags for life, rather than the designer handbag of which I used to be so fond.
These days, my expensive Marc Jacobs bag, containing a handful of other items that seem to belong to a bygone era – like a make-up bag and wallet full of cash – sits under my desk gathering dust.
I have barely given it a second thought because, well, who needs a designer bag when you are home all the time and the only other humans you see are those in your immediate bubble?
Which makes me wonder – a little – why I ever “needed” a designer bag in the first place.
It’s not just handbags that currently feel as pointless as an umbrella in a hurricane.
In fact, so many of the trappings of life as we once knew it seem irrelevant at the moment.
Think of all those corner offices in central London locations – once one of the ultimate signposts of having “made it” – which currently lie empty while the previous occupants go to work in their kitchens or living rooms.
The fleets of snazzy cars sitting, undriven and largely pointless, on driveways up and down the country.
The fancy holidays, which are all cancelled for the foreseeable future.
When it comes to clothes, this season’s “must-haves” are more likely to be an extensive athleisurewear collection than anything from the catwalks.
Even the children who are pupils at the most high-performing schools in the country are now being educated at home.
And forget impressive job titles – 50 per cent of the country now has the same employer: the Government.
The work world is currently segregated by the blunt instrument of those who are able to work remotely and those who aren’t.
Why? Because we are all in the same maelstrom, inside the same snow globe which is still being shaken vigorously up and down by the tight fist of Covid-19.
For as long as this goes on, many of the things that once defined us, and acted as indications to the outside world of our success and status in life, no longer mean what they once used to.
That is partly because most of us are too preoccupied by keeping our various boats afloat to compare ourselves with others.
Also, we are all too busy baking sourdough, home schooling, learning how to grow our own veg and make do and mend to worry about something as trivial as status.
Of course, all this is only temporary.
But it occurred to me the other day that this is an opportunity.
None of us have any idea what life will look like when the snow settles. So, as we occupy this liminal space between our old existence and the next chapter, maybe we are being offered a chance to redefine our values – and think about what really matters.
